Here's What It Means If Your Raw Chicken Looks Shredded
BY CATHERINE NYORANI
Raw chicken can look shredded, stringy, and pulled apart, which is called "spaghetti meat." This happens when chickens are bred to grow larger and faster in commercial farms.
When this happens, the muscle fibers don't get enough oxygen and nutrients to develop properly, causing them to deteriorate and separate.
Despite affecting texture, taste, and protein levels, there is no evidence that spaghetti meat affects the chicken's safety. So long as you've cooked it right, it's safe to eat.
Slow cooking or using a sauce or broth can also help add moisture and improve the texture. To avoid spaghetti meat, buy organic or free-range chicken instead.
