Here's The US State That Consumes The Most Alcohol Per Person
BY Matthew Spina
Per America's National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, which has surveyed Americans’ drinking habits for decades, New Hampshire leads in per-capita ethanol consumption.
Measuring beer, wine, and spirits’ alcohol content against the volume of those drinks sold, the NIAAA noted that America's per-capita consumption in 2021 was 2.5 gallons per year.
That means the average American consumes about 535 alcoholic drinks per year as measured in "standard drinks,” which equals 12 oz of beer, 5 oz of wine, or 1.5 oz of spirits.
However, that average level pales in comparison to New Hampshire. In the NIAAA survey, the state topped out at 4.43 gallons per person — over 50% higher than the national average.
