Here Are The Ancient Snacks Served At The Roman Colosseum
BY Nancy Parode
Much like in the modern world, the ancient Romans who attended games at the Colosseum enjoyed eating various snacks while they watched the gladiators and wild beasts fight.
In 2021, archaeologists explored the iconic Roman amphitheater's sewers and hydraulic system, which fell into disuse sometime between 404 C.E.
The archaeologists discovered the ancient remains of Roman spectators' trash and compiled a list of snacks consumed in the Colosseum's stands and walkways.
Some were simple and portable, including olives, peaches, walnuts, berries, grapes, figs, and melons. However, others were more elaborate.
The archaeologists found evidence that meats were cooked on small, portable braziers. They also believe that the attendees ate a form of pizza similar to modern-day focaccia.
Excavation at other sites reveals Romans had a thriving street food culture. They could grab a snack or hot food and a hot or cold drink at a thermopolium (also called a popina).
