Gordon Ramsay's Rule For The Best Time To Season Rice
BY KAREN HART
Plain rice is an easy and versatile side dish, but plain shouldn't mean flavorless. Gordon Ramsay says to season rice before cooking to infuse flavor into the grains as they boil.
Beyond black pepper and salt, Ramsay enjoys adding pierced cardamom pods to the rice for their spicy and sweet taste, and star anise seeds for aroma and flavor.
Adding seasonings as a garnish works fine, but integrating them into the rice before cooking adds their flavors directly into the dish instead of just sitting on top.
Ramsay’s advice is ideal for dried herbs and seasonings, but when it comes to fresh, delicate herbs, it’s best to add them after cooking the rice.
