Get More Out Of Strawberries With A Smarter Stem Technique
By STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
About 64% of the world's strawberry crop is wasted per year, since we often throw away part of the berry by cutting off the stem, but you can do your part to reduce this waste.
If you can’t bring yourself to eat strawberry tops by putting them in smoothies or other recipes, use this technique to get rid of the stems and waste less of the fruit.
Instead of cutting off the berry tops, twist and pluck the stem off with your hands. Then, trim off the white tops of the berries, making sure not to remove any of the red flesh.
You can also use a paring knife to carefully core the berries, or insert a straw into the bottom of the berry, then push it all the way through the top until the leaves pop off.
