Geoffrey Zakarian Says The Boiling Water Spoon Trick Actually Works
By SHAYE GLISSON
You’ve probably seen the old adage that a watched pot never boils in literal action plenty of times — the moment you turn around is usually when your pot of water boils over. Luckily, Geoffrey Zakarian has a hack to keep that boiling water inside the pot, and the hack actually works!
Wooden spoons are a kitchen staple, and not just for stirring. Zakarian says to place a wooden spoon across the top of a pot of boiling water, so that as bubbles from the boiling water touch the cool, dry wood, they burst, and release the steam, thereby preventing the water from boiling over.
If you don't have a wooden spoon, you can try tossing an ice cube into the pot as the water starts frothing up. According to Stack Exchange, the drastic temperature change from the ice causes the frothy bubbles to stop in their tracks, which prevents the water from spilling over.
