Exactly What Variety Cheese Is Babybel Original?
BY Neala Broderick
Babybel original is a semi-soft cheese with a delicate, nutty flavor reminiscent of many mild cheeses. However, the type of cheese used can be hard to pinpoint for many.
Despite being a French brand, Babybel is inspired by Edam, a cheese from the Netherlands. Like its fellow Dutch cousin Gouda, Edam is nutty and salty with a balanced body.
There are similarities, but the key term used on Babybel's website is "Edam-style." While it may fall into the Edam family, its ingredients slightly differ.
Babybel is produced in the same traditional manner as Edam, but it uses a vegetarian rennet instead of an animal rennet, making it great for lacto-vegetarian cheese lovers.
