Every US State's Most Iconic Dessert
BY Emily Hunt
Alabama
Invented by Emma Rylander Lane, the Alabama Lane Cake is a four-layer sponge cake with layers of filling made from egg yolks, butter, sugar, raisins, and whiskey.
Alaska
Alaska's most iconic dessert is the fireweed donut, a donut coated in a glaze made from the fireweed wildflower. The hot pink donut has its sweetness cut by a nice tang.
Arizona
Sopapillas are a blend of fry bread and puff pastry. With a crisp outer shell and a soft interior, the versatile sweet treat works well with all sorts of flavor pairings.
Arkansas
Possum pie has many variants but usually features layers of cream cheese, chocolate pudding, vanilla pudding, and whipped cream or cool whip nestled in a nutty crumb crust.
California
Chiffon cake was invented by Harry Baker. Its use of vegetable oil and the rich taste of the hybrid angel food/butter cake (typically flavored with lemon) made it a hit.
