Do You Need To Rinse Canned Clams?
BY JOHN TOLLEY
Canned clams are convenient because they are already shelled, cooked, and ready to go. Whether you wash the clams or not depends on the intended use and salt content.
Rinsing canned clams isn’t necessary, but it does help prevent unforeseen flavors from being present. If the clams are salty, a quick rinse under cold water can help reduce it.
It’s important to consider the saltiness of other ingredients in a dish. Rinsing the clams allows better control of the overall salinity and ensures a more balanced flavor profile.
Some brands offer clams packed in natural juices with minimal added salt, so rinsing may not be necessary. Cooks can simply drain the clams from the liquid and add them directly.
