Dark Chocolate Vs Coffee: What's The Caffeine Difference?
BY Gene Gerrard
You can get your daily dose of caffeine from both dark chocolate and coffee. However, there's a significant difference between how much caffeine you get from each item.
Chocolate's caffeine comes from the cocoa solids extracted from cacao beans. As a rule, chocolate with a higher percentage of cocoa solids and less sugar has the most caffeine.
Dark chocolate with 70% to 85% cocoa solids can contain 22.7 milligrams of caffeine per ounce, whereas a 12-ounce brewed coffee caffeine can have 113 - 247 milligrams.
So, in comparison, a 12-ounce portion of dark chocolate has more caffeine at approximately 272 milligrams — but you'd have to eat a lot of chocolate around 8 ounces to get it.
Plus, the caffeine in dark chocolate has a different chemical composition. You don't get the usual side effects of consuming too much caffeine in coffee, like jitters and anxiety.
