Chemex Coffeemakers Are Unexpectedly Perfect Wine Decanters
BY MOLLY HARRIS
Decanting, or exposing wine to oxygen, can help enhance the flavors and aromas of certain wines. As it turns out, Chemex coffeemakers double perfectly as decanters.
The Chemex's wide base and neck provide ample surface area for the wine to come into contact with oxygen and release its aromas and flavors.
Additionally, it's made of odorless and tasteless high-quality borosilicate glass, which ensures that the glass won't impart any unwanted flavors.
Thoroughly clean your Chemex with warm, soapy water to ensure no coffee oils linger, and then pour the wine into the Chemex, allowing it to aerate before serving.
While not all wines benefit from decanting, it is particularly useful for softening the harsh edges of young, bold reds, and separating the sediment from older bottles of red.
