Charlie Mitchell: NYC's First Black Chef With A Michelin Star
By MICHELLE WELSCH
Out of all the chefs making art out of food in New York City, Charlie Mitchell is the only Black culinary artist to be honored with a Michelin star. Mitchell skipped culinary school, instead gaining on-the-job experience until ultimately landing his gig as executive chef at Brooklyn’s Clover Hill, and he attributes his success to patience and perseverance.
Clover Hill is an elegant 700-square-foot restaurant tucked away on a tree-lined Brooklyn block of brownstones, and it seats just 30 diners in an elegant and cozy atmosphere decorated with books and art. The restaurant creates a homey environment while serving Mitchell's masterfully created food mixing new American and French cuisine.
On top of the Michelin star, Mitchell has also been labeled Best Young Chef and is in the running for James Beard's Emerging Chef award. When asked to give advice to aspiring chefs, Mitchell said, "learn as much about food as possible, admire the craft, and make sure you prioritize learning the business side of running the restaurant."
