Can You Eat Corn While Following The Keto Diet?
By STEPHANIE FRIEDMAN
The ketogenic or "keto" diet has become incredibly popular in recent years, and involves eating plenty of fats and protein and very little carbs to put your body into a fat-burning state called ketosis. While these instructions seem clear, there’s a bit of a gray area with certain foods, including fruits and veggies like corn.
While it is often categorized as a vegetable, corn is technically a grain, though it is very popular for eating fresh in addition to making cornmeal or corn tortillas. However, corn isn't a "no" for keto because it's a grain; its high starch or sugar content is what really makes it a poor choice for those trying to stick to their keto diet.
Corn contains a lot of carbohydrates, as evidenced by its sweet flavor, but keto dieters don't have to avoid it like the plague. While fresh corn and corn-based products like cornstarch, corn syrup, and processed corn are a definite pass, one cup of popcorn only has 6.5 grams of carbs, making it a permissible snack for keto.
