Boston's Oldest Pizzeria Has Been Serving Customers Since 1926
BY LISA CURRAN MATTE
In 1926, Luigi D’Auria opened Regina Pizzeria in Boston. It was the city’s first-ever pizza parlor, and some people claim it ranks among the best pizza in the United States.
D'Auria ran it for decades before either selling the business or, by some accounts, dying and leaving the restaurant to a relative. Even the year of the turnover is up for debate.
We know for sure that Regina Pizzeria ended up in the hands of the Polcari family — who haven't changed much — and has been operating under their ownership ever since.
The chefs turn out up to 900 Old World-style pizzas per day in the original oven from 1888. The cheese or the aged dough is likely what sets this pizza apart and makes it iconic.
