Bolster Philly Cheesesteaks With An Easy Korean Twist
BY PEGGY AOKI
To amp up the flavor of your classic Philly cheesesteak, sub that plain sliced steak for Korean marinated bulgogi beef and add more layers of Korean flavor for a unique twist.
Bulgogi is thinly sliced steak marinated in soy sauce, sesame oil, sugar, and ginger or garlic. It’s often served with rice and Korean side dishes such as kimchi and leaf lettuce.
The umami-rich soy marinade adds deep flavor to the steak that compliments the traditional onions and peppers, and mixes with the melted cheese perfectly.
Bulgogi has a mouthwatering aroma and a juicy, tender texture that's exactly right for a sandwich. It makes the best stand-in for the thin slices of steak in a cheesesteak.
Check your pantry for marinade ingredients and slice the steak before adding the marinade so the flavor penetrates fast. Ready-to-cook bulgogi is also available at Korean markets.
You can also pick up a container of kimchi to spice up the cheesesteak, or just to have on the side. Good side dishes include sesame bean sprouts and mild yellow pickled radish.
