Manhattan:
The Bittersweet Take On A
Classic Cocktail
BY WENDY LEIGH
The Classic Manhattan cocktail comes from a good shake-up of rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, aromatic Angostura bitters, and a maraschino cherry garnish.
The Black Manhattan involves two ingredient swaps, adding a dash of citric orange bitters and dropping the sweet vermouth for a bittersweet Averna amaro.
The Black Manhattan was created in 2005 by bartender Todd Smith, creating a more complex cocktail that takes on heavier herbal and caramel notes from the Italian amaro.
Some bartenders replace the
rye whiskey with bourbon
to tone down the spicy characteristics. Some swap
the candy-sweet maraschino
for a brandied cherry.
