Anthony Bourdain Discovered His Favorite Breakfast In Mexico City
BY JOHN TOLLEY
On the first episode of the fifth season of Anthony Bourdain’s "No Reservations," he visited Mexico City’s Fonda Margarita, famous for its stews and freshly roasted coffee.
While the restaurant itself is quite casual, it’s bursting with activity as cooks dish up stews (guisados) based on recipes of founder and namesake, Margarita Lugo de Castillo.
These recipes include chicharrón in salsa verde, bistec en passila, huevos tirados, and café de olla. Margarita’s children run the show, cooking the food and managing the front.
It is decidedly a breakfast spot, as the hours run only from 5:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., but Fonda Margarita is able to host a healthy mix of locals and tourists in that time.
