Alton Brown's Favorite Cocktail Puts A Bourbon-Forward Twist On A Classic
BY Peggy Aoki
The boulevardier, made from equal amounts of bourbon, sweet vermouth, and Campari, is Alton Brown's favorite cocktail. It's a slightly older cousin of the classic Negroni.
The Negroni uses gin instead of bourbon, but the two drinks share a bitter flavor lent by Campari. The boulevardier features an orange peel garnish but no mixers, sodas, or syrups.
The flavors of the three spirits that make up the high-proof boulevardier are multilayered. With vanilla, caramel, and various spices, the whiskey gives the drink its base.
Sweet vermouth adds a deep candied fruit taste from the infusions used to make it. Finally, Campari, the bright red Italian aperitif, adds sharp bitterness to round out the taste.
