Alton Brown's Coffee Maker Hack For Flavorful Instant Oatmeal
By KAREN HART
Instant oatmeal may not be on your list of favorite breakfast foods, but the instant version is both convenient, nutritious, and excellent for traveling. If you're going to be staying in a hotel and want a fast and tasty breakfast, celebrity chef Alton Brown recommends packing some instant oatmeal and preparing it in this easy way.
Alton Brown explains in a Food Network video that you should pack individual packets of oatmeal in your suitcase, along with some packets of honey and jam. If your hotel room has a good old-fashioned coffee maker, you can make a customized bowl of oats that will be ready to eat by the time you put on your shoes and socks.
Dump your packet of oatmeal, along with the honey and jam, into the coffee pot, then add a pinch of salt, which will help to enhance the oatmeal's nutty flavor; Brown also suggests adding a tea bag into the brew basket for extra flavor. Pass eight to 10 ounces of water through the brewing system and your oatmeal will be ready.
