All Biscuit Lovers Should Memorize One Easy Make-Ahead Technique
BY Sara Klimek
While biting into a buttermilk biscuit is always magical, preparing it takes time and effort. To make the process faster and easier, prepare homemade biscuit mix ahead of time.
Mix dry ingredients like flour, leavening agents, and salt with grated, frozen butter and place it in the freezer. Frozen butter is easy to grate and disperses well into the mix.
When you crave biscuits, pull your bagged biscuit mix out of the freezer, add your buttermilk, shape the biscuits, and bake. The mix will stay fresh for about six months.
The key is to add the buttermilk when it's time to bake the biscuits. Otherwise, the liquid and acidity in the buttermilk will prematurely cause the leavening agents to kickstart.
After a while, the biscuits will lose puffiness and fizz. Alternatively, you can hack this tip by adding buttermilk powder directly to your bag before you pop it in the freezer.
