A Touch Of Bourbon Makes Store-Bought Pie Crust Taste Homemade
BY MICHELLE WELSCH
Store-bought pie crusts have a reputation for being dry or flavorless, and adding moisture and flavor with a wash of bourbon can make them seem a lot more like homemade.
Brushing a bourbon wash over the crust will make it more tender, chewy, and flavorful. For the best flavor, use a high-quality bourbon with 40% ABV or higher.
The alcohol will cook out in the oven, leaving behind a delicate nutty flavor, and your pre-made crust will be flaky and crisp. All you need is bourbon and two other ingredients.
Fill a dish with melted butter, vanilla extract, and bourbon to create a liquid that you can paint over the pie crust with a pastry brush. Then, simply bake as normal to finish.
Bourbon's vanilla, smoky, and nutty flavors boost both sweet and savory pies. Try adding chopped nuts or cinnamon sugar to bring out earthy or sweet notes of the liquor.
