A Texas Restaurant Is The Birthplace Of Stubb's Barbecue Sauce
BY TRACY DOUCETTE
Stubb's Original Bar-B-Que originated over 50 years ago, when Korean war veteran Christopher B. "Stubb" Stubblefield opened a restaurant called Stubb's Bar-B-Que in Lubbock, Texas.
From 1968 to 1975, the small roadhouse became home to emerging musical artists. However, repeated run-ins with the IRS resulted in Stubb being forced to close and move to Austin.
When he reopened in 1985, Stubb was still working on his sauce for distribution on the side. He was cooking it all by hand in a 60-gallon cooker, stirred with a paddle boat oar.
As the popularity for Stubb's sauce grew, he eventually expanded his operation to include more help. In 1992, Stubb's Original and Stubb's Spicy sauces were on store shelves.
