Though many Southern chefs use regional ingredients to preserve links to the past, Steven Satterfield looks to fresh, local produce to anchor him to the future. While enduring chemotherapy after a cancer diagnosis in 2012, he saw that though many fellow patients found their appetites dwindling, he was drawn more than ever to the seasonal fruits and vegetables. He has since made a full recovery and become something of an evangelist, using his restaurant menu and new cookbook as a pulpit to extol the pleasures and virtues of the earth's bounty—with a rather Southern bent.
