For a good chunk of her life, Vivian Howard wanted nothing more than to slough off all traces of her Eastern North Carolina upbringing. She moved north, tamped down her accent and did her best to distance herself from a culture for which she'd grown up thinking she had to apologize for. It was the food that brought her back (and family, too). Now she uses the wattage of her award-winning PBS show, A Chef's Life, to spotlight and celebrate the farmers and artisans who are so essential to the still undersung region of the South and pay homage to the humble dishes that sustained the people she loves.
