Mt. Crawford Creamery Traditional Buttermilk

Unlike that super-tangy, pucker-up, store-bought "cultured" buttermilk, real buttermilk is simply the liquid that's leftover after making butter. It's naturally low in fat and doesn't contain any bacteria for culturing (which is what gives store-bought buttermilk that thick, sour taste). Mt. Crawford's version is sweet and delicious with just the right amount of natural tang, making it an excellent choice for buttermilk pie or ranch dressing. However, many Southern folk will still advocate enjoying buttermilk the old-school way: in a tall glass filled with day-old corn bread and eaten with a spoon. (Note: If you can't find Mt. Crawford, simply look for fresh buttermilk at your local farmers' market or make your own.)
