Cod

Of all the foods on this list, cod is the one best consumed in moderation—and with a certain degree of reverence. Not because of any potential detriment to diners' health, but rather because the seafood that once kept colonists richly fed and, until recent years, sustained a way of life along the New England coastline have been so severely depleted that severe restrictions have been placed on the fishermen in the hope that the stocks can be replenished. In the meantime, devotees can keep their palates whet with imported salt cod (popular in Basque, Portuguese and New England cuisine) until the fish once again swim freely.
