That is indeed the sound of Manhattan's wine lovers cheering: The owners of the great Williamsburg wine shop Uva have opened an equally great spin-off just south of Madison Square Park.
The lofty 15-foot wine racks at the brand-new Flatiron Wines & Spirits are stocked with global wines that are expressive of the regions they're from, made as naturally as possible.
What's different here is the climate-controlled back room that holds a substantial selection of older bottles sourced from private collectors. Not every wine shop has a fantastic selection of under-$10 bottles, along with a stash of vintage Burgundies from such esteemed producers as Clos de la Roche, Domaine Romanée Conti and JF Mugnier.
As rosé is the wine to drink at the moment, try the 2011 Noëlla Morantin Rosé ($24 for 750 ml) from the shop's rosé-loaded front table. This juicy Cabernet Sauvignon-based wine from France's Loire is ideal with summer produce.
Our preferred times to drop by Flatiron Wines: Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m., when the shop offers tastes of sparkling wine, usually grower Champagne, or Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. when an artisan spirit maker is often shaking cocktail samples.
