Over the course of the last decade, Asheville, North Carolina, has become the culinary star of the Appalachian South. Nestled among the resplendent Blue Ridge Mountains, the town is literally surrounded by high-quality food, from family farms raising sustainable meats and local produce to a progressive restaurant and bar scene downtown. There's also beer—lots and lots of beer from 17-plus local breweries. Most of all, though, Asheville is a genial community of blue-collar artists and artisans working hard to create an inherent sense of Southeast American culture.
