Fare Thee Well
Julia Child kicked off Planned Parenthood's Food Fare more than 30 years ago; now more than 50 purveyors convene for the annual fund-raiser. In addition to bites from restaurants like Ammo, Clementine and Il Grano, food trucks--including Kogi, Border Grill and The Grilled Cheese Truck--will be parked outside. You can get a little shopping done at some of the non-culinary tables, to boot. Tickets are $150 (day session) or $200 (night session). Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, 1855 Main St.; pplafoodfare.com

Blind Date
Drinking wine out of a brown bag isn't always a bad thing. At this LearnAboutWine blind tasting ($95), you'll sample 1-ounce pours of 20 different Pinot Noirs, including those from cult favorites Kosta Browne, Sea Smoke and Brewer-Clifton. Without the assumptions that come with peeping the label, you'll discover the subtle nuances of each wine and, as a bonus, see how they pair with burgers from In-N-Out. 530 Molino St., Loft 218, Downtown; 310-451-7600 or learnaboutwine.com

The Fifth Taste
Providence chef Michael Cimarusti wants to show you something he picked up at the Japanese Culinary Academy--specifically, umami. He'll teach the basics of the savory "fifth taste" at this cooking demo ($100), including variations on dashi (a stock that's the foundation of many Japanese dishes), sushi and miso. You, of course, get to taste his creations. 5955 Melrose Ave., Hollywood; 323-460-4170 or providencela.com
