In between all the taste testing and restaurant ranting, it's all too easy to lose sight of why we're in this industry. At the end of the day, it's about the beauty of food and how it brings us together. L.A.-based Life and Thyme, an online food publication, is one of the few media outlets that gets it, both verbally and visually.

So when we saw that the website launched its first print magazine, available now, we couldn't help but feel all warm and fuzzy inside. The focus of this inaugural issue is the "little guys," the unsung heroes of the culinary industry, like a Vietnamese shrimper living in New Orleans or the volunteers at Punjab's Golden Temple in India who donate thousands of meals a day.

With its beautiful photography and prose, this 96-pager ($16) is definitely worth picking up.
