The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and with it comes the backyard barbecues, beach trips and family gatherings that make Independence Day a summertime favorite. If you’ve attended a few of these parties, you know the drill when it comes to the food: pasta salad, hot dogs, cubes of watermelon and, of course, dessert. Apparently, nothing says American spirit quite like lots of frosting and a dose of food coloring.

Red, white and blue desserts may have become a tradition for the Fourth of July, but that doesn’t mean we have to suffer through another American flag sheet cake. Therefore, we scoured Instagram for the most creative and craveable renditions of the colorful trend, and we weren’t disappointed. These patriotic desserts (and a few breakfasts) are what we want to be enjoying come Independence Day.

So go light a few sparklers, don your stars-and-stripes swim trunks, and feast your eyes on these.

Friends, do you ever have those moments when you’re convinced you’ve F-ed up big time? As someone who’s building a freelance life that involves a lot of “firsts,” and someone who is particularly prone to imposter’s syndrome, this is a sensation I experience on a daily basis. But today I’m talking about the feeling of failure that involves burnt vegetables, curdled egg nog, or a gluten-free crust that crumbles into nothingness. They make the victories that much sweeter. And (spoiler alert!) in this case, I KILLED IT.
