Best Pie In Every State

While we may ring in joyous celebrations with a champagne toast and cake, we often welcome a holiday with pie. While some desserts are overly complicated, pies can be simple and still delicious; it all begins with filling in a basic crust. Still, Thanksgiving isn't quite Turkey Day without a heaping serving of pumpkin pie, and there's nothing quite like a Fourth of July cherry pie a la mode in the glow of fireworks. Not to mention, math teachers around the world love to celebrate annual Pi Day on March 14.

However, holidays aren't the only time people love to indulge in this delicious dessert because diners and bakeries across the country offer decadent and delicious pies year-round. Of course, like any other favorite food, there are regional favorites, but your taste buds will presumably agree that the following are some of the best in the country. So, save your fork because we've got the pie.

Alabama: Original sweet potato pie at JaWanda's Sweet Potato Pies

JaWanda is the owner of JaWanda's Sweet Potato Pies in Birmingham, Alabama, and believes in southern hospitality and incredible cooking. Her original sweet potato pie is creamy and rich — and very much worth a try.

Alaska: Strawberry rhubarb pie at A Pie Stop

This Alaskan pie shop was founded on a dream and classic Amish recipes. A Pie Stop is in Anchorage and offers its customers an extensive menu of options. Be sure to check out the Strawberry rhubarb pie with a crust so perfect it'll remind you of grandma's recipe.

Arizona: Brown sugar peach pie at Mamma Toledo's The Pie Hole

Mamma Toledo's The Pie Hole is a beloved Phoenix spot dedicated to making pie with love and intention. What began as a food truck quickly became a brick-and-mortar store, though you'll often find the pie truck touring. For whole pies, you'll want to order online or call (602) 332-7346 at least a day in advance.

The Pie Hole's brown sugar peach pie blends the delicious and plump fruit with the goodness of brown sugar to create a dessert that is nothing short of delicious.

Arkansas: Half-and-half pie at Ms. Lena's Pie Shop

This small pie shop may not only be the best in Arkansas; many claim it to be the best in the country. Ms. Lena's Pie Shop is in a small town called De Valls Bluff, about an hour from Little Rock.

Delaware: Key lime pie at Sweet Somethings Dessert Shop

Sweet Somethings Dessert Shop in Wilmington prizes itself as creating edible works of art and some of the absolute best desserts in Delaware Valley. Florida: Salted honey bourbon pie at P is for Pie Bake Shop

This small bakery in Orlando focuses on using local and seasonal ingredients to make its pies in delectable small batches. P is for Pie Bake Shop offers flavors on a rotating basis, but posts its offerings on Facebook so you can plan your order before you go.

If the salted honey bourbon pie is on hand when you visit, be sure to snatch it right up. With the slight crunch of its salt paired with the warm bourbon and sweet honey flavor, this one could become your new favorite.

Georgia: Buttermilk pie at The Yesterday Cafe

Known as the "Home of the Buttermilk Pie," Downtown Greensboro's The Yesterday Cafe offers ambiance and history to its patrons. While there, you simply must try its best-known, "world-famous" offering: buttermilk pie. In the café, you can order the dessert in single-slice form or whole to take home.

This shop is only open during lunchtime from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday through Sunday, so be sure you visit then.

Hawaii: Chocolate haupia cream pie at Ted's Bakery

When a restaurant or bakery always wins for being the best in its category, you just know it will be great. After all, most locals would direct you to Ted's Bakery for great pie, and vacationers quickly become repeat visitors.

Ted's is on the North Shore of Oahu; it serves hot food and delicious bakery items, but none more popular than its chocolate haupia cream pie. There's nothing better in paradise, and you can even order online.

Idaho: Molasses bourbon pecan pie at Boise Pie Co.

Boise Pie Co. roots itself in family baking marathons and a love of togetherness. This bakery offers a molasses bourbon pecan pie with all the sweetness and comforting pecan filling it can muster.

If you can't quite make it in person, Boise Pie Co. ships worldwide from Boise, and you can also purchase using the Crave app. If you have a specific pie in mind, you are best advised to order at least three days in advance to help secure your choice because their menu does rotate.

Illinois: Apple rosewater raspberry pie at Hoosier Mama Pie Company

This Chicago bakery is a newer pie stop, but it follows the old cooking methods to relive the golden age of hometown bakeries. You'll want to pick up an apple rosewater raspberry pie at Hoosier Mama Pie Company because it combines flavors you may not typically find in these treats in the most delicious ways you can imagine. You can order your dessert ahead, but be sure to give it a two-day lead time.

Indiana: Apple pie at The Apple Works Orchard

The Apple Works in Trafalgar strives to create the best flavor for its customers by allowing its apples to ripen in the orchards before picking.

To get the whole experience, don't miss out on one of its classic apple pies, available for pickup in its retail barn. When you cut into this dessert, the first thing you'll notice is the generous amount of layered fruit within a perfect crust.

Iowa: Cherry pie at Crouse Cafe

Crouse Cafe has been serving Indianola since 1946 as a family-run business. It has been passed down through the generations and remains a favorite place to enjoy lunch and some pie. Though Crouse Cafe always keeps a stocked pastry case of options, they do have a rotating menu of specials. Be sure you save room for some of their classic cherry pie because it's our pick as the best in Iowa.

Kansas: Coconut cream pie at Sommerset Hall Cafe

Locals love Sommerset Hall Cafe as a gathering space. In 2008, Norma Grubb — then-resident pie baker — won the distinction of having baked the best pie in America on the "Good Morning America" national pie contest. So when you swing by this Dover favorite, be sure to order a slice of this award-winning coconut cream pie that even Diane Sawyer asked to have shipped to her yacht.

Kentucky: Mayday pie at Missy's Pies, Etc.

Missy's Pies, Etc. out of Lexington takes great pains to craft its pies and cheesecakes from scratch daily. These desserts are so popular that Missy's sells 2,000 of them in the days leading up to Thanksgiving. If you're hoping to order for an upcoming holiday, the shop recommends ordering as soon as possible.

Even if you aren't purchasing for a holiday and just want to drop by for lunch, be sure to snag a generous slice of mayday pie, a pecan and chocolate chip offering named for the Kentucky Derby.

Louisiana: Strawberry ice box pie at Strawn's Eat Shop Too

Southern Living Magazine and The Food Network have both featured Strawn's Eat Shop Too in Shreveport, and locals even know it as "that pie place" for its outstanding strawberry ice box pie. The ice box desserts come in chocolate, coconut, banana, and peanut butter, but the most popular flavor is strawberry.

While you can order the slices in-house, you'll need to purchase the whole pie as part of a carryout order.

Maine: Triple berry pie at Two Fat Cats Bakery

Portland's own Two Fat Cats Bakery focuses on creating incredible pastries in the art of rustic cooking using simple, delicious ingredients. To get a taste of all that Maine goodness, order some triple berry pie that is full of fresh, local blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. This one is available year-round, and you can order it whole in three sizes: 4, 7, or 9-inch.

Local residents can purchase a pie for pickup 48 hours in advance, and devoted visitors can order for nationwide shipping from Gold Belly.

Maryland: Baltimore bomb pie at Dangerously Delicious Pies

Nearly nothing goes better with tasty pie than great music, and Dangerously Delicious Pies in Baltimore combines the two. With offerings that feed between six and ten people, the shop offers sweet and savory pies in addition to quiche.

Order the Baltimore bomb pie, the top seller, for something extra special. This dessert is packed full of sweet vanilla filling and Berger Cookies, another Baltimore specialty. In addition to ordering in person, you can order through UberEats, GrubHub, and Gold Belly.

Massachusetts: Chicken pot pie at Petsi Pies

Petsi Pies in Somerville has received many accolades, including for having some of the best pies in the country. It also offers a pretty extensive menu with several favorites, including apple pie and cherry crumb pie, but our pick is the chicken pot pie offering. It can be purchased frozen and ready for you to bake. The pie is full of delicious ingredients, including roasted chicken.

You can order pies online for pickup or delivery.

Michigan: Cherry pie at The Cherry Hut

Nothing says success like transitioning from a roadside stand to a nationwide favorite for cherry pie. Beulah's The Cherry Hut has been open for 100 years and continues to go strong.

While many pie stops have a wide selection of flavors, the shop focuses on one: cherry. You'll love the generous, plump cherries that fill out this dessert, and with the cross through the middle, you even get a sneak peek inside that gooey goodness. With pie as great as this, you won't want other options.

Minnesota: Banana cream pie at Carol's Restaurant

If there's one thing you'll hear about visiting Carol's Restaurant in Blaine, it's that you shouldn't leave without pie. You'll be absolutely delighted with the from-scratch menu that provides many options in a comfortable atmosphere.

Be sure to check out the freshly made banana cream pie that will pair well with nearly any lunch offered. It has a base of bananas that is topped with fluffy whipped cream. If you don't have room for pie after your meal, order some to go.

Mississippi: Chocolate meringue pie at Sugaree's Bakery

Sugaree's Bakery in New Albany is well known for its beautiful, multilayer cakes. But in addition to these impressive desserts, you'll also find a nice selection of pies.

While the bakery carries the chess and pecan pie year-round, we highly recommend looking out for the chocolate meringue. It is certainly a statement piece with all of that beautifully fluffed and toasted cream. Please note that this pie is only available on Fridays and during holidays. You can also create an online order for curbside pickup or nationwide delivery.

Missouri: Strawberry white chocolate pie at Peggy Jean's Pies

Peggy Jean's Pies is a legacy that began with a friendship: Jeanne Plumley and Peggy Day baked great pies in Columbia for ten years before Peggy's passing. Many years later, Jeanne and her daughter, Rebecca, began working toward reopening Peggy Jean's Pies and turned it into the multi-generational legacy it is today.

We highly recommend the strawberry white chocolate pie, which features strawberry whipped cream on top of a chocolate cheesecake. In addition to visiting the bakery, you can also have a pie delivered by ordering online.

Montana: Huckleberry pie at The Huckleberry Patch

The Huckleberry Patch in Hungry Horse is in wild huckleberry country. Since these berries only really grow in mountain areas with substantial moisture, when you stop by this shop, you should definitely check out the huckleberry pie. It is made from scratch with delicious, fresh huckleberries.

If you cannot visit in person, order your pie online for that delicious, fresh taste delivered straight to your door.

Nebraska: Cherry pie at Sweet Magnolias Bake Shop

When a bakery focuses on nostalgia and delicious taste, it will probably be outstanding. The bakers at Sweet Magnolias Bake Shop pour their hearts into all of their offered pastries, but we highly recommend checking in when pies are available and scooping up the classic cherry pie. It is full of fresh fruit that fills a perfect crust.

You can order online for pick up at the bake shop if you prefer. Please note that even though items move quickly, the online stock gets restocked between 2 to 3 p.m.

Nevada: Whoopee pie at Chef Flemming's Bakeshop

Since 2008, Chef Flemming's Bakeshop in Henderson has brought pastries based on Danish heritage to its loyal patrons. With techniques from Chef Flemming's artisanal baking career, you will immediately notice the fresh baked taste and nod to quaint European bakeries.

While whoopee pie is not the most standard of options, we especially love the one offered here. It looks like a traditional whoopie pie, with chocolate cake surrounding a sweet cream; Chef Flemming just takes this sweetness to the next level.

New Hampshire: Chicken pot pie at Woodstock Pie and Coffee

Perhaps nothing goes as well with pie as coffee, and if it can be from one of the best bakeries in the country, all the better. Woodstock Pie and Coffee in North Woodstock offers several types of pies, including dessert, deluxe, and quiche.

Though everyone loves a good sweet treat, our pick from this bakery is the chicken pot pie. With the cutest chicken shape on top, this savory option is stuffed with so much chicken and veggies that it will certainly satisfy that comfort food itch.

New Jersey: Key lime pie at The Pie Store

While you may not expect one of the best key lime pies in the country to come from a restaurant specializing in home-baked British goods, The Pie Store might just prove you wrong. This bakery in Upper Montclair serves the dessert in three sizes: mini, small, and large.

In addition to its pie, The Pie Store will also offer Refreshers, which are small, grab-and-go treats for when you are on the run. They are not available all year, but they seem to be a summer specialty.

New Mexico: Chile pies at Pie-O-Neer Pies

Sometimes, the best pie comes from the most unexpected places. That is perhaps no more true for the excellent pies at Pie-O-Neer Pies than anywhere else. This shop is a little off the beaten path but in the aptly named community of Pie Town, New Mexico.

At Pie-O-Neer Pies, we encourage you to give one of its unique signature chile pies a try. It has several options, including peach green chile, chocolate chess with red chile, and even New Mexico apple with green chile and pine nuts.

New York: Black bottom almond chess pie at Petee's Pie Company

Petee's Pie Company uses only the best natural ingredients; it focuses on seasonal and local produce and fair-trade sweeteners to fill pie crusts made with organic flour and butter from grass-fed cows.

We highly recommend checking out Petee's black bottom almond chess pie. The southern favorite normally includes eggs with butter, buttermilk, and sugar. However, Petee's version adds amaretto, tops the dessert with toasted almonds, and has a bottom layer of chocolate ganache. You can order same-day pickup or even purchase ahead for a future date.

North Carolina: Brownie fudge pie at Baked Pie Company

Baked Pie Company answers a problem the owner saw in her hometown of South Asheville. Noticing that the town was missing a great pie spot, this bakery became a reality. Even though the menu is in constant rotation, new options are added all the time.

The brownie fudge pie is a favorite among devoted regulars. To be festive, it often gets different M&M decorations, depending on the holiday or season.

North Dakota: Cherry pie at Nichole's Fine Pastry & Café

This downtown Fargo bakery is committed to bringing its community delicious pastries that are on trend, providing its own spin on everyone's classic favorites. One of the best pies available at Nichole's Fine Pastry & Café is the cherry pie. It comes with a crumb topping or lattice topping, so you can decide which one is ideal for you. Be sure to call at least 48 hours in advance to order your dessert.

Ohio: Lemon meringue pie at Mama Jo Homestyle Pies

While some bakeries allow their pies to sit around for a few days, Mama Jo Homestyle Pies in Amherst bakes and sells its treats on the same day. This bakery offers 36 different flavors of pies and has perfected its recipes over three generations.

While you really can't go wrong with any of the menu items, we highly recommend ordering the old-fashioned lemon meringue pie. With a beautifully toasted meringue over a lemon base, this classic, beautiful dessert is one of this bakery's top sellers.

Oklahoma: Drunken turtle at Pie Junkie

There's nearly nothing better for a business than great word of mouth, and that is exactly how Pie Junkie got to be the incredible bakery it is today. This Oklahoma City bakery started off as a dream between two moms who became locally famous for their excellent pies.

Of their fabulous desserts, we recommend the drunken turtle pie with its graham cracker crust filled with chocolate and topped with salted bourbon caramel and pecans. In addition to stopping in for a slice, you can also order online.

Oregon: Marionberry pie at Otis Cafe

Locals always treasure a great breakfast spot, and that is what Otis Cafe has become to the people of Lincoln City. Regular customers love it so much that they even say its toast is the best around. The café is also well-known for its marionberry pie, which sits in a flaky, moist crust and is filled with delicious, juicy marionberry filling. Since this destination is primarily a breakfast spot, be sure to stop in before 2:45 PST because that is when the bakery section closes up shop.

Pennsylvania: Shoofly pie at Dutch Haven

Look no further than Dutch Haven in Lancaster County for the best shoofly pie in America. It is very sweet with a filling based on rich, sweet molasses. Be sure to top your dessert with a healthy dollop of whipped cream or ice cream.

Dutch Haven's iconic building features a large windmill that is hard to miss. If you visit in person, please note that the shop is closed on Wednesdays. If you can't make it out to the area, you can also order a shoofly pie online

Rhode Island: Strawberry pie at Sweet Berry Farm

Jan and Michelle Eckhart brought this Middletown orchard to life and have had quite a successful business hosting weddings, pick-your-own events, and, of course, selling baked goods. Sweet Berry Farm lives up to its name with its berry pies, but the strawberry one goes above and beyond to become a standout favorite. The filling is so juicy it's nearly spilling out the vented slices on top. This dessert is as beautiful as it is delicious.

These pies go quickly, so be sure to order ahead for all your holiday needs.

South Carolina: Pecan pie at WildFlour Pastry

Charleston Chow calls Lauren Mitterer's WildFlour Pastry bakery the "Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory" of Charleston. With a menu that rotates with the different seasons, you'll always find something new and interesting. However, we highly recommend ordering the pecan pie, which seems to be available frequently throughout the year. These desserts come in 6 or 9-inch rounds and are topped with toasted pecans.

Please note that the bakery is closed on both Monday and Tuesday, so be sure to visit Wednesday through Sunday.

South Dakota: Raspberry rhubarb jalapeño pie at The Purple Pie Place

Not far from Mount Rushmore, this bakery is a seasonal favorite among vacationers and locals alike. The Purple Pie Place offers a variety of delicious flavors, but for something out of the ordinary, check out the raspberry rhubarb jalapeño pie for the perfect blend of sweet and spicy.

To make sure it is open during your intended visit, be sure to check out The Purple Pie Place's Facebook page for hours and announcements.

Tennessee: I-40 pie at Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop

The legacy of the Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop begins in the kitchens of the owner's grandmothers and only grew from there. A Knoxville original, this pie shop has been franchised in more locations throughout Tennessee and many other states. Though there are some great menu items at Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop, we find a well-named pie irresistible, so you must check out the I-40 pie with pecans, chocolate chips, and coconut all on top of a shortbread crust.

Texas: Pecan pie at Royers Cafe

In the small Texas town of Round Top, residents and visitors flock to Royers Cafe for a taste of gourmet southern comfort food. Be sure to grab some dessert because these folks take their pie seriously — so seriously, in fact, that every pie is automatically served with ice cream (unless you request that it be left off). While the whole dessert menu is delicious, a true southern classic like pecan pie will not steer you wrong.

Utah: Boysenberry pie at Croshaw's Gourmet Pies

Croshaw's Gourmet Pies stands behind a four-pillar approach: bake pies fresh, provide excellent service, make the best sweets, and hire great cooks. This St. George favorite is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and though they are closed for most holidays, many locals order their holiday pies ahead of time like clockwork.

While this shop has over 34 flavors, we recommend checking out the boysenberry pie offering. It has a buttery, flakey crust stuffed with beautiful, richly-colored boysenberry filling.

Vermont: Meatloaf and cheesy scalloped potato pie at Poorhouse Pies

There aren't many places left in the country that are self-serve and based entirely on the honor system, but Poorhouse Pies in Underhill is one of them. Each day, the stand is stocked, and most days, it sells out. You can also order ahead by messaging the shop on Facebook or calling (802) 858-9129.

Though the menu constantly rotates, if you see the meatloaf and cheesy scalloped potato pie available, be sure to grab it. This pie has layers of warm, cheesy goodness that can only be described as pure comfort.

Virginia: Coconut custard pie at Woodruff's Pies

Monroe is home to Woodruff's Pies, but locals really know it as "the pie shop." Woodruff's prices for its desserts also can't be beaten. You can pick up the popular coconut custard pie for only $17.79 (as of October 2022). Like any quality custard pie, the coconut custard pie gets its magic from that sweet filling.

To be sure your favorite pie is in stock before you arrive, you can call (434) 384-1650 to check on its availability. You can also pre-order your dessert, a practice highly recommended during the holidays.

Washington: Blue Hawaiian pie at A La Mode Pies

A La Mode Pies is a popular Seattle staple with three locations: Phinney Ridge, West Seattle, and Ballard. But the small chain doesn't just serve great pies; customers can also learn how to make these desserts through its offered pie-making classes.

Though its menu rotates, order the blue Hawaiian pie when you see it come around. With blueberry on the bottom and coconut on top, you'll love these balanced flavors. You can order a pie online if you can't get to one of the cafés.

West Virginia: Pumpkin pie at Apple Annie's

Apple Annie's offers delicious, homestyle American breakfasts in an easy-to-access location, and it's proud to make pies and baked goods the old-fashioned way. The shop is a great bet for a delicious pie that is no fuss and perfect every time.

Though seasonal offerings come and go, we recommend stopping by to quench that pumpkin pie craving with a pie that hits all those pumpkin spice flavors iconic to the fall. Even if it isn't pumpkin season, this bakery has a slew of other favorites you're sure to love.

Wisconsin: Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag at The Elegant Farmer

The Elegant Farmer in Mukwonago is a bakery, deli, and market that took a classic favorite and turned it into something extraordinary. This is the home of the famous Apple Pie Baked in a Paper Bag. The bag helps ensure that the apples get that perfectly cooked feel — and could potentially make for the best apple pie out there. The apples are tender in the golden brown crust, so these brown bags may just be magic. If you can't get to the market, order online through Gold Belly.

Wyoming: Blueberry rhubarb pie at Cowboy Cafe

With two locations, there are double the opportunities to order some outstanding pie from the Cowboy Cafe in Dubois or Sheridan. This café offers a full menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options, but what may keep you coming back over and over is the dessert.

The menu frequently rotates, but if you can, we recommend choosing one of their rhubarb-based pies. The blueberry rhubarb is an uncommon combination that will leave you licking your plate.
