Falls Church's newest market is a neighborhood affair
The walls of the week-old Local Market are packed with an all-star lineup of local food bounty.
Indeed, nearly all the produce, sodas, preserves and baked goods at the small Falls Church shop are from local farms and farmers' market vendors and purveyors.
The left side of the shop brims with fresh fruit and vegetables, including green and red tomatoes ($2 a pound), fragrantly ripe cantaloupes ($2 a pound), radishes ($1.50) and sweet, delicate yellow peaches ($2.50 a pound).
In the refrigerators, the market stocks snappy dill pickle spears ($7) and chipotle-seasoned spicy okra ($7) from Alexandria's Fresh Crunch, along with Trickling Springs ice creams ($3.50) and various sizes of milk in glass jars.
Jamie Stachowski, a chef turned sausage maker, supplies his full product line ($7), including thick chorizo, British bangers, chile-spiced Santa Fe chicken sausages, and brats. In lieu of commercial ketchups, the store sells Bigg Riggs' spicy Awesome Sauce, and wing sauce with wasabi ketchup is on the way.
If you plan to turn those sausages into a barbecue, pick up a supply of McCutcheon's birch beer and sarsaparilla sodas ($1.25).
