If You Noticed A Topo Chico Shortage, You're Not Alone

If you've had a hard time finding bottles of Topo Chico for your Ranch Water cocktails this summer, you aren't the only one. According to NBC News in Austin, the beloved sparkling mineral water has been disappearing from store shelves across the United States recently.

Topo Chico is a mineral sparkling water that has been produced in Mexico since 1895 (via Vine Pair). According to Forbes, the company was acquired by Coca-Cola Inc. in 2017, though it's still sourced from the same spring near Monterrey, Mexico.

Some of the most hard hit are Texans who have come to identify strongly with the brand. Topo Chico has had a longstanding relationship with the Lone Star state, but Vine Pair notes that love for the brand grew deeper as the popularity of Ranch Water grew. Ranch water is a beloved summer cocktail made with tequila, lime, and — of course — Topo Chico. When the brand launched a hard seltzer in Spring 2021, it quickly took over 20% of the state's hard seltzer market (via Chicago Tribune).

Shortage comes amid heat wave

Topo Chico also had a shortage last Summer due to "extremely strong consumer demand" and a "shortage of raw materials," according to NBC News. A spokesperson from Coca-Cola said in a statement to NBC News that the current shortage is due to similar supply challenges, saying, "[We are] working hard to keep it on store shelves. We appreciate our loyal fans' patience."

The New York Times notes that this shortage comes amid a heat wave. Parts of Texas are expected to reach temperatures close to 110 degrees Fahrenheit this week. Newsweek reports that parts of Mexico — particularly Monterrey where Topo Chico is sourced — are also currently experiencing a drought. Monterey municipal authorities have been limiting water usage, and drinks from the area have been in short supply recently. It claims that the lack of water in the region may be contributing to this year's current Topo Chico shortage.

Texans will have to find a way to cool off without the help of their favorite mineral water.
