  • ⅓ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¾ cup whole milk
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the sliced pears, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt.
  4. Cook for 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pears begin to soften and release their juices.
  5. Turn off the heat and stir in the vanilla.
  6. Place the remaining ½ cup butter in a 9×9-inch square baking dish.
  7. Transfer to the oven for 3–5 minutes, until melted. Carefully remove.
  8. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  9. Add the milk and vanilla and whisk until just combined.
  10. Pour the batter evenly over the melted butter.
  11. Spoon the warm pears evenly over the batter with a slotted spoon or spatula. Do not mix together.
  12. Bake for 40–50 minutes, until the top is golden, the edges are bubbling, and the batter is set in the center.
  13. Let cool for 10 minutes, then serve.
