Ingredients
  • 8 cups broccoli florets
  • 5 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 1 tablespoon minced garlic
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded fontina
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan, divided
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
Directions
  1. Preheat the oven to 350 F.
  2. Fill a large pot with 1 inch of water and bring to a simmer.
  3. Add broccoli in a steamer basket and cover. Steam until bright green and tender, about 5-8 minutes.
  4. Remove the broccoli from the steamer and spread it out evenly in a large casserole dish.
  5. Meanwhile, melt 3 tablespoons butter in a saucepan over medium heat.
  6. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds.
  7. Whisk in the flour and stir until a paste forms.
  8. Slowly whisk in the milk and allow to thicken, about 3 minutes, whisking constantly. Remove from the heat.
  9. Add the fontina, cheddar, ¼ cup Parmesan, salt, and pepper and stir until smooth.
  10. Pour the cheese sauce over the broccoli.
  11. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons butter and combine with the breadcrumbs and remaining ¼ cup Parmesan.
  12. Sprinkle the breadcrumb mixture across the top of the au gratin.
  13. Bake for 50 minutes, or until browned on top.
  14. Serve the broccoli au gratin right away.
