The Humble Kitchen Tool For Pour-Over Coffee Without A Fancy Setup

There's something magical about the ritual of making pour-over coffee. The aroma, the precision, the anticipation of that perfect cup — it's an experience that coffee lovers adore. But what if you don't have a pour-over setup? You might be surprised to learn that you can achieve pour-over coffee greatness with ordinary kitchen tools you likely already have at home. No expensive equipment is actually required to take part in this morning routine.

While pour-over coffee aficionados may swear by their fancy equipment, all you really need is a small fine mesh sieve or strainer fitted with a coffee filter. With these two items ready to go, simply place the strainer over a carafe or coffee mug and begin the pour-over process. Just be sure that the filter fully covers the sieve and that the sieve is not too wobbly — no one wants to spill their coffee first thing in the morning.

Use the right pour-over coffee ratio

If you have never made pour-over coffee for yourself at home, then you might need to know about a few other tips to ensure this homemade setup does the trick. Apart from using your favorite coffee, be sure to use the right coffee-to-water ratio. A good ratio to follow is 1:15, or one part coffee to 15 parts water. To get the right amount of water, simply multiply the grams of coffee you plan to use by 15 to find out how many grams of water you should use.

Properly heated water — between 195 degrees Fahrenheit and 205 degrees Fahrenheit — is also important for the best extraction. You can roughly reach this range by boiling water and allowing it to sit for 30 seconds before pouring it over the grounds. Once the coffee grounds and water have been prepared, pour just enough water to soak the grounds and allow the coffee to bloom. After 30 seconds, you can slowly and steadily pour the remaining water over the grounds. Finally, allow the coffee to brew for up to four minutes before you enjoy that first sip.

With a little ingenuity and these tips, you can create a delightful cup of pour-over coffee from the comfort of your own kitchen without the expensive equipment. So grab your tools, embrace the process, and enjoy the practice of brewing a truly exceptional cup of coffee.
