TASTING TABLE la

Earlez Grille

South L.A. is not where you'd expect to find a large selection of vegan and vegetarian dishes, but this Crenshaw Blvd. standby has just that. Every animal-based dish on the menu has a meatless counterpart, including the Thriller Tamales, a bit of masa studded with stewed veggies and blanketed in kidney-bean chili and melted cheddar (or vegan!) cheese.

Chego

Roy Choi's Chubby Pork Belly rice bowl is delicious in the evening, but there's something about being able to eat it at lunch--a meal befitting a rice bowl--makes it taste even better. Chego lunch: What took so long?

Tracey's Belizean Restaurant

The stretch of Western Ave. accessible from the new Expo line is home to a number of Belizean restaurants, include this spot, just a block away from the Metro stop. Dishes are simple--stewed meats served with rice and beans--but when that meat is a tender pile of ox tails, and you lash the rice and beans with chile sauce, you don't need much more.

Campanile

Mark Peel's institution of a restaurant on La Brea is still alive and kicking after twenty-three years in business. The affordable, approachable dishes offered on the new "social hour" menu include a lovely plate of tender duck meatballs cooked in tomato sauce.
