What to Substitute for Brown Sugar
Ran out of brown sugar? Don't panic--Editorial Assistant Posie Harwood has a perfect substitute: add a tablespoon of unsulfured molasses to a cup of white cane sugar and mix until there are no clumps. You can also make your own powdered sugar by pulsing white sugar in a food processor until smooth enough--add a tablespoon of cornstarch for each cup of sugar if you want it to match the commercial sugar's taste.
