A Visionary Beer
Divine Brewing's new release is made to endure
Given Divine Brewing’s name, you’d expect brewmaster Kevin Robinson to have his eye on the big picture.
The brewery’s second release, Engelen Tarwe (Dutch for “angel’s wheat”; $15 for 750 ml), is designed to last: You can drink it now or cellar it for up to three years.
Engelen Tarwe resembles a cross between a hefeweizen and a Belgian dubbel, with a smooth, almost unctuous body and the enigmatic scent of African grains of paradise flitting about the nose.
The beer is made with wheat, barley and oats, and Robinson uses two yeasts in the primary fermentation and a third for bottling. “I do appreciate the power of threes,” he says.
Distribution is limited to a few Bay Area stores, including Berkeley Bowl West and Healthy Spirits, which also featured the Engelen Tarwe in its June beer club.
Robinson, who currently works days at Russian River Brewing Co., eventually plans to release a different beer on both solstices and equinoxes. That may be far in the future--perhaps when this year’s bottling hits its peak.
