Pronto's Pastries and Panini
Grab and go at Bar Bambino's new kiosk
We know, it's January.
So you probably don't want to hear about a savory scone that oozes Gruyère, shot through with ribbons of sweet caramelized onions ($3).
Oh, you do? Well, imagine a bowl of French onion soup, capped with a glorious layer of browned cheese, transformed into a pastry (click here for the recipe). It's just one of the morning offerings at Pronto, the new kiosk from Bar Bambino parked in the lobby of the ODC Theater.
The restaurant is set to open a café in the space later this year, but in the meantime Pronto is the grab-and-go option, with pastries prepared by Bar Bambino pastry chef Alyce Shields.
In addition to the scone (which we think is best taken home and warmed), there are batons of tangy, fine-crumbed crème fraîche-and-cinnamon coffee cake ($2.50). Or try the rosemary corn cake ($3), with a nubby texture courtesy of cornmeal, that could be the base of a fine winter shortcake, with citrus supremes replacing the berries.
There are also panini, with varied fillings as the day progresses, from a morning option of almond and apple butters to an afternoon panini of roast chicken and Fuyu persimmon chutney (all $7).
