Fancy Feast
A holiday meal in four easy steps
There's plenty to think about this time of year, but you don't want to botch the holiday feast because of a preoccupied brain. Consider this a shopping list for a preplanned, fabulous meal.
Snacks: To kick off your feast, order appetizers from Boulettes Larder, including snappy poached Georgia shrimp ($36 per pound) and a pint of tapenade, a sweet-salty combination of black olives, currants, capers, Cognac and thyme ($10.50 per pint).
The Main Event: Fatted Calf will have grass-fed, standing rib roast sourced from cows raised in Montana. Choose the standard ($21 per pound) or, if you're feeling flush, opt for the Wagyu ($60 per pound). Fancy a Dickensian Christmas, stuffed goose and all? Avedano's will have a limited supply of fresh geese available for preorder ($12 per pound).
Cheese: If ever there was a cult cheese, this is it: Rush Creek Reserve from Uplands Cheese Co. The Wisconsin-made wheel is modeled after luscious, creamy Vacherin Mont d'Or and is especially good when gently warmed. Cowgirl Creamery is expecting a shipment this week; call ahead to reserve.
Sweets: For a classic finish, Clairesquares' plum pudding ($29) is loaded with raisins, currants, cherries, apple, cranberries and spice, plus Irish butter and whiskey. It wouldn't be complete without a dollop of brandy butter ($9).
