Wake-Up Call
Osha Thai's invigorating new brunch
If you've had it with the prototypical brunch of bread, eggs and bacon, Osha Thai on Valencia Street has an eye-popping remedy.
The Mission outpost of the restaurant mini-empire recently launched a weekend brunch menu stocked with the requisite bottomless mimosas, and a small collection of classic Thai dishes and Southeast Asian reconsiderations of brunch stalwarts.
Here, the lowdown:
Kao tom ($10) This traditional Thai rice breakfast soup is a fragrant mixture of savory (ground pork; fried garlic), herbaceous (slivers of lemongrass; cilantro sprigs), and a touch of sweet. Eating a bowl is said to please Mae Pro Sob, the goddess of rice. She is thought to keep food and overall wellness in great supply when happy. If nothing else, kao tom is a demure way to banish the evil hangover gods.
Osha Egg Bomb ($11) A diner take on Thai food, this plate comprises two fried eggs atop a pile of rice tossed with crisp basil leaves, sliced red bell peppers and a dash of chili and garlic sauce. Pick your protein from a list that includes minced pork, mixed vegetables, tofu, chicken and prawns. Caveat: The Egg Bomb is beyond substantive. Hello, naptime.
Osha Thai, 819 Valencia St. (at 19th St.); 415-826-7738 or oshathai.com; brunch served Sat. and Sun., 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
