Heartland Brewery breaks out its first limited-edition beer

Until recently, if you wanted to tip back one of Heartland Brewery's beers, you had to hoof it to one of the brewpub's six Manhattan locations.

But after purchasing new tanks and increasing its production capacity by 25 percent, Heartland has infiltrated local beer-loving bars like the Blind Tiger Ale House, Spuyten Duyvil and the Waterfront Ale House.

Heartland has also branched out into limited-edition, small-batch beers that let its brewmaster, Kelly Taylor, flex his creative muscles. Fittingly for the harvest season, Heartland's first boutique creation is the super-charged Imperial Smiling Pumpkin Ale.

Although Heartland has long sold its Smiling Pumpkin (pictured) as a seasonal fall brew, the Imperial ratchets up the popular spiced ale's formulation with more malt and more fresh pumpkin. The result is a high-proof (8 percent ABV) knockout, with heady notes of cinnamon and nutmeg--like pumpkin pie sold by the pint.

The Brewery's next small-batch release--a Belgian-style Chocolate Ale made with Madagascar vanilla--will be available after Thanksgiving.

Imperial Smiling Pumpkin Ale is available at Blind Tiger Ale House, Spuyten Duyvil, The Ginger Man and Waterfront Ale House (both locations).
