Family Knows Best

Sweets with a family history

Affogato photo: Happy David

Often, we dine at restaurants to try a dish we wouldn't cook at home.

But at these three spots backed by husband-and-wife teams, another family's home cooking has us hooked:

Raspberry Lamington Former Top Chef contestant Mark Simmons grew up eating lamingtons at birthday parties and in cafeterias in New Zealand. At Kiwiana, his new Park Slope restaurant run with his wife, Beth, he lightly soaks cuboid sponge cakes ($8) in raspberry liqueur, then rolls them in fresh coconut flakes. 847 Union St. (at Seventh Ave.), Brooklyn; 718-230-3682 or kiwiana-nyc.com

Brownie Affogato Godmother Rozzie's brownies were on the menu at The Queens Kickshaw before Ben Sandler and Jennifer Lim had even crystallized the idea for their Astoria restaurant. For his take, Sandler uses walnuts and Mast Brothers chocolate, finishing the squares ($5) with heavy cream and triple-strength, cold-brew coffee. 40-17 Broadway (at 41st St.), Queens; 718-777-0913 or thequeenskickshaw.com

Wife's Whiskey Cake At Shane Covey and Jennifer Gavin's sliver of an East Village oyster bar, Upstate, you have to "earn" your whiskey cake. Gavin makes only six cakes a week. This simple, glazed yellow cake is a family tradition started by her stepmother's mother; smile, and you might be rewarded with a gratis slice. 95 First Ave. (at E. Sixth St.); 917-408-3395 or upstatenyc.com
