Maine Beer Company By David And Daniel Kleban

Maine Beer Company comes to New York

Sometimes it's all a matter of scale.

With their business, Maine Beer Company, brothers David and Daniel Kleban keep producing the unfiltered, bottle-conditioned, quality beer they'd been making at home–but in larger batches.

Now, finally, the pair's suds have arrived in New York City, when, previously, the fine beers were strictly available Down East.

The elegant 500-milliliter bottles, which are wrapped in heavy paper with simple designs done by David, affirm the brewery's plain beginnings. The Klebans started Maine Beer in a garage, selling beer from a car.

Peeper (pictured; $6), the company's flagship brew, is the first to arrive in the Big Apple. It's an aggressively dry-hopped beer with a bright, citrusy aroma. We're looking forward to seeing some of the other three beers around New York soon–especially Lunch IPA, so named for a female finback whale with a chunk missing from her dorsal fin.

The Klebans are as focused on doing good as they are on staying small: They're members of 1% for the Planet, their electricity is fully wind powered and they donate their used grain, yeast and grain bags to local farmers.

You'd do yourself a different kind of good by tracking down a bottle of Peeper.

Maine Beer Company beer is available at Whole Foods Bowery, Good Beer, Eastern District, Bklyn Larder and Spuyten Duyvil Grocery
