Salud - Soho's Newest Juice Retreat

Salud says "cheers" to Soho

The opening of Salud, Soho's newest juice retreat, has been a long time coming.

Its owner, Eddie Larios, spent his childhood in the neighborhood, before opening Salud's first outpost in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn. Then plans to open a Soho spot were stalled by Hurricane Sandy's destructive fist.

But open Salud has, with a charming, Latin-influenced menu of organic juices, smoothies, salads, tortas and soups.

If you are feeling the juice-bar burnout, know that the wallet scorch is slightly kinder here, and the flavor combinations more globally sophisticated.

Try a tall, frothy glass of Mexican alfalfa mint-and-pineapple juice ($8): It's as refreshing as all get-out. Or the Purple Haze smoothie ($8.50), which cleverly uses cooked and roasted amaranth for crunch, along with blueberries, bananas and hemp milk.

Tortillas are made to order and stuffed with a captivatingly sticky combination of quesillo cheese, black beans, huitlacoche and chipotle mayo ($8.75).

Most wonderfully, Larios, with his career as an art director at InStyle and Elle, has managed to import the same feeling of incredible calm from the original shop in Brooklyn.
