The Best Pizza In Miami 2014 | Tasting Table MIA

The best pizzas in Miami

Love is in the air—pizza love, that is. Without a distinct style to call its own, Miami has embraced pies of all stripes, from classic New York slices to traditional Neapolitan pies. Here are ten of our favorites.

① Lucali in Sunset Harbor

This NYC institution's pies ($24, plus toppings) come with an import tax, but you get what you pay for: A perfectly engineered, paper-thin crust nestling the most flavorful (and secretive) sauce this side of the Prime Meridian.

② Harry's Pizzeria in Design District

Michael Schwartz's pizza-centric spot down the street from his flagship restaurant offers modern thin-crust pies ($12 to $16)—cooked in a wood-burning oven—that include decidedly nontraditional toppings like rock shrimp, pork and fig, short rib and fennel. Pair your slice with a Genuine Home Brew.

③ Thea's in Allapattah

When Thea Goldman split from Joey's, she found success taking her upmarket sensibilities to a neighborhood where few dared to venture. The Thea ($15)—topped with gorgonzola, arugula, walnut and truffle oil—showcases her style in fine form.

④ Andiamo in MiMo District

The former gas station turned pizza joint was there before the neighborhood became cool. When in doubt, opt for the Godfather ($11.95 to 18.95): A charred brick-oven crust that packs the flavors of Italy into every bite, topped with Italian sausage, spicy pepperoni, meatballs, onions, tangy peppers, earthy mushrooms, olives, mozzarella and parmesan.

⑤ Pizza Pazza in Edgewater

Pazza ("Crazy") is a relative newcomer to the pizza scene, but has already developed a following for its inventive Neapolitan pies. True to its origins, all pizzas are coated with a homemade San Marzano tomato sauce and creamy Fior di latte mozzarella. The signature Pazza pizza ($24.99) has a rich mix of thinly sliced ham, mozzerella, wild mushrooms and shaved black truffles—a luxurious combo if ever there was one.

⑥ Blocks Pizza in South Beach

On the surface it may seem like a regular slice joint, but the al taglio (rectangular) pieces at the appropriately named Blocks stand out from the rest thanks to a 300-year-old Sardinian mother dough recipe, organic seasonal produce and house-made sauces.

⑦ Lemoni Pizza & Kitchen in Buena Vista

From the ladies who brought us Lemoni Café comes an Italian trattoria serving paper-thin, handsomely blistered pizza options for omnivores and vegans alike. The Catalina ($12 or $18) is a favorite, featuring a generous portion of fresh mozzarella sprinkled with spinach, basil, and ready-to-pop baked eggs.

⑧ Steve's Pizza in North Miam

Steve's won't win any awards for atmosphere, but come after hours for mammoth-sized, hugely satisfying New York–style slices ($2.75), not to mention the urban history lessons graffitied all over the booths.

⑨ Pummarola Pastificio and Pizzeria in Coral Gables

Last December, the siblings behind Pummarola opened a second outpost of their popular Boca Raton pizzeria in the Gables. Keeping with the memory of their nonna, the "pizza bar" is decorated with a snazzy red Fiat. The mozzarella in the Margherita ($6.50) neatly melts neatly over the doughy, bubbly crust thanks to a scorching wood oven that burns at a steady 900º.

⑩ Stanzione 87 in Brickell

At the city's first certified Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana pizzeria—a non-profit dedicated to protecting the sanctity of authentic Neapolitan pizza—order a whole pie with sweet cherry tomatoes, full-bodied mozzarella di bufala, and the savory trifecta of anchovies, capers and black olives ($22). Request that it arrive unsliced, as it's traditional in Naples to eat pizza with a fork and knife.
