My Bloody Valentine
Proof Bakery's blood-orange-chocolate cake
We've found the final piece to your Valentine's Day puzzle.
Whether you're going the Champagne-and-flowers route or opting for something less traditional, like a dinner of grilled heart, we think Proof Bakery's blood-orange-paved chocolate cake should be part of your eating plans for February 14.
The cake is dark and bitter, the top spotted with sticky, Grand Marnier-glazed rounds of our favorite sanguine citrus. Cardamom adds a touch of spice--another element that makes this confection, which mimics a pineapple upside-down cake in terms of form, into a unique dessert in this city's pastry landscape.
Proof has been serving slices of it for the last few weeks, ever since blood oranges started showing up at the farmers' markets. If you want your own eight-inch version for Tuesday ($38), you have to place an order by Sunday, February 12. And if you tend to be forgetful, like us, there might be some extra cakes on hand come Tuesday morning.
But don't worry if you miss your chance next week; this bloody valentine will stick around after the holiday has come and gone.
