The wines of RYME Cellars
RYME Cellars is a collaborative winery.
The name itself is an amalgam of proprietors Ryan and Megan Glaab's own; the husband-and-wife team has worked in tandem since they crushed one ton of Aglianico in 2007.
That wine and four others comprised RYME's debut releases, some of which are now trickling down from Sonoma to Los Angeles. There's a 2009 Ribolla Gialla, made in the orange-wine style, that has the structure of a red and the compelling stone-fruit notes that keep us returning to the orange-wine well. We love how it complements the Santa Barbara rock crab claws at Salt's Cure ($18 a glass; $63 for 750 ml)
And then there's the Vermentino.
In marriage as in winemaking, differences arise. And in 2010, the couple didn't see eye to eye regarding this Italian grape. Ryan wanted to make another orange wine; Megan wanted something that recalled the bright Vermentino wines of Sardinia. The compromise? A His and Hers approach.
Sadly, L.A. can only taste the His side of the argument ($37 for 750 ml at Domaine LA). Lightly astringent and rich in texture, this honeyed-peach-tasting wine plays well with a variety of foods, making it a logical inclusion on the LudoBites 8.0 wine list ($67 for 750 ml).
